Some people are paralyzed in their tracks when they hit an obstacle in their lives, while others manage to thrive because of them. Ryan Holiday's The Obstacle Is the Way: The Timeless Art of Turning Trials into Triumph doesn't provide step-by-step instructions on accomplishing your goals, but it does offer a mantra and mindset that everyone can pursue.
This is part of Lifehacker's new book review series. Not every life hack can be summed up in a blog post, so we've decided to review some of our favorite life-changing books for deeper dives into life's most important topics.
Author Ryan Holiday is only 27, but he has worked in marketing, written for major publications like Forbes and the New York Observer , and been a media strategist for other authors. The Obstacle Is the Way is Holiday's third book, and deals with failure , perspective , and having the mental toughness to carry on no matter what the circumstances. It's a study and reflection on the philosophy of Stoicism , along with stories of great historical figures that realized that problems were merely a chance to grow stronger. By the time you finish it, you might just feel a little stronger yourself.
In the past week, Ryan Holiday read seven books, flew from Austin to Atlanta to Miami to Atlanta to …Who This Book Is For
This book is for everyone, and I mean everyone . We all have obstacles in our life. Whether you're an entrepreneur, artist, or student, this book is about seeing problems the right way. It cuts through the bullshit excuses you may have and delivers example after example of great people doing great things despite their struggles. This book is for everyone that wants to do something, but hasn't yet.
This is also a motivational read for anyone that feels like they're stuck and they have nowhere to go. Holiday makes it clear that this is "not a book of gushing, hazy optimism," so cynics can approach knowing that this is not a head-in-the-clouds, follow-your-dreams lesson in looking on the bright side. If anything, I recommend you buy this book as a gift for someone who is constantly complaining, whining, or announcing that the world is out to get them.

Over the past decade, the call for seafood traceability has grown louder and more urgent amid rising concerns about mislabeling, illegal fishing, and diminishing stocks of some of the world’s most commercially important fish. Recent reports have now sounded additional alarms on human trafficking and modern-day slavery within the seafood supply chain. For seafood companies attempting to play by the rules, these systemic failures threaten market efficiencies, brand integrity, and profits.
The seafood traceability agenda to date has been driven largely by nonprofits, consumer advocacy groups, and government agencies focused on product recall, public health, and accurate labeling issues. Increasingly, retailers and other industry representatives are taking up the cause, having been influenced by consumer demand for product transparency and recognizing the need to mitigate risk. However, in the absence of regulation, pushing full-chain implementation of the data capture and management systems required to support true end-to-end traceability has proved challenging.
This report aims to highlight the compelling market incentives of traceability, while raising awareness of the very real human and technological barriers that hamper broader adoption. Through interviews with key technology vendors, NGOs, government agencies, trade groups, and a sample of supply-chain players, Future of Fish assessed: credible business wins offered by traceability technology systems in general; twelve specific seafood traceability vendor solutions and the key business benefits of each; key principles for a smooth transition to traceability adoption and implementation; and barriers to traceability technology adoption, successful implementation, and whole-chain traceability.
Efforts by nonprofits and government agencies to push their traceability agendas are often confounded by the fact that many companies perceive traceability technology as purely an added cost with no measurable returns. However, traceability technology offers some clear business wins for seafood companies. Within the seafood industry, the ability of fishers, processors, distributors, and retailers to seamlessly share key information about a product as it wends its way from dock to dinner plate can improve inventory management, reduce operational inefficiencies, reduce waste and improve yields, increase the pace of decision making, and fuel innovation across the entire business ecosystem. For an industry where the difference between making a profit and being in the red can be a matter of pennies per pound, traceability technology can provide clear competitive advantage.

We are excited to announce that we’re working on “Visual Studio Live Share”, which enables developers using Visual Studio 2017 or Visual Studio Code to collaborate in real-time! Learn more about Live Share and the upcoming limited private preview .
Live Share enables your team to quickly collaborate on the same codebase without the need to synchronize code or to configure the same development tools, settings, or environment.
When it comes to Live Share, seeing is believing. Watch the following video to get an idea of what we are working on:
When you share a collaborative session, your teammate sees the context of the workspace in their editor. This means your teammate can read the code you shared without having to clone a repo or install any dependencies your code relies on. They can use rich language features to navigate within the code; not only just opening other files as text but using semantic analysis-based navigation like Go to Definition or Peek.
When your teammate edits a file, they get editor enhancements like IntelliSense, statement completion, and suggestions. Each of you can open files, navigate, edit code, highlight, or refactor - and changes are instantly reflected. As you edit you can see your teammate’s cursor, jump to the location of your teammate’s carat, or follow their actions.
Collaborative debugging goes further, allowing you and your teammate to independently inspect objects using debugging features like hovers, locals and watches, the stack trace or the debug console. You are both able to set breakpoints and advance the debug cursor to step through the session.
While Microsoft Teams and Slack bring dynamic team collaboration into a digital form, there is more we can do to make it easier to work together in a development team. Screen-sharing or accessing a machine remotely means that only one person is in control while the other observes. Instant messaging, email, or other tools are great for basic messages but collaborating on a body of code often requires more than a code snippet or a single file to share the necessary context. Additionally, the validity of edits can be impacted by multiple files in the workspace. If you want to replicate your teammate’s environment, it just takes a lot of time to get everything set up.
